Built to Last.
May 2025
The challenge
During my semester in London, I participated in the
Creative Conscience Awards. The challenge was to use
your creativity to create an app that makes the world a better place. For this, I designed Built to
Last. An app that combats overconsumption and unfair manufacturing practices in the tech industry.
The Problem
The tech industry is growing fast, but many products are made to break quickly, causing overconsumption in the tech industry. This overconsumption is a huge cause for the massive amounts of e-waste, the fastest growing solid waste stream globally. And to provide materials for these massively consumed products, we exploit miners who mine rare earth metals under extremely poor working conditions. Built to Last is an app that helps people find durable and ethically made tech products. By making better choices, we can create a fairer and more sustainable future for everyone.
The app
Built to Last provides the user with information and alternatives to their products. The app increases awareness on the issue, provides ethical alternatives for products and informs the user about repairability, ethicality and sustainability per product.

During this project, I worked together with international students in various feedback rounds to create the best idea for the Creative Conscience Awards. I also gained experience in showcasing my product in a pitch document and a showcase video.
By submitting my work to the Creative Conscience awards, I helped inspire others to use their creativity to make the world a better place. I am happy to share that Built to Last has won the silver award in the category Conscious Consumption!
